Vintage Car Couples Session – Tami and Jeff

Jeff and Tami, aka mom and dad. This session is easily a top favorite for me.

My parents have been together for over 20 years, and they truly deserve everything good in the world. My dad is a huge car guy, so when he found a vintage cherry red 1963 Chevrolet Nova, I knew I had to do something to memorialize the occasion.

I wanted this session to be very nostalgic and film-like, to match the vibe from the car. I also wanted the story to follow my parents on a “first date”. Living in Nebraska, it isn’t hard to find locations that fit the vibe I was going for. I wanted a dirt road and lots of land. We found the perfect place less than 10 minutes from our house.

I walked my parents through my typical shooting process which lets them know that I like to capture moments as they happen and try not to pose very often. Rather than setting my subjects into specific poses, I like to give them prompts to follow and interpret in their own way. This helps my couples stay moving and natural since it is a direction, not an order.

To start the shoot, I had my dad drive up and down the street a handful of times so I could capture the motion of the car. I had my settings set around 1/50 shutter speed, 100 ISO, and my f-stop around 4.0. I think these ended up looking really cool with the perfect amount of motion blur, which was exactly what I was going for.

Once we had enough driving shots, I had them pull over for some super cute pictures that I truly think you’d find under your parents bed in their stash of printed photos from when they were younger. (Am I speaking from experience? Yes I am. These two have hundreds of printed photos in storage bins under their bed. Probably where my love for photography stemmed from). I’m truly obsessed with these photos and just love how they turned out.

To finish out the session, my mom wanted some solo shots of my dad which I had so much fun with. My dad is a teenager at heart so getting photos of him with this sweet car was right up his alley and I just think they turned out so cool.

I’m so thankful we took the time to take these photos. Having photos to remember your parents doing the things they love is such a special ability to have and I am grateful for the opportunity.

Mom and Dad, I love ya!!
