Romantic Winter Wedding – Sadie and Lukas

This wedding gallery is so incredibly special to me. Not only is it some of my favorite work, it also happens to be the very first wedding I ever got to shoot.

Alex Marasco of Marasco Photography is someone I have known for years. We did gymnastics together for a handful of years back in my middle school days, and I had seen her photography work once we had gotten older. When I decided I wanted to pursue wedding photography, I reached out to Alex and asked if I’d be able to shadow her and shortly after that conversation my first wedding was on my calendar.

I was SO nervous getting to the venue. I hadn’t been to that many weddings in general as a guest, and hadn’t been a part of a bridal party ever, so I truly had no idea what to expect going into the pre-ceremony timeline.

The wedding was at The Barn at the Ackerhurst Dairy Farm, which is a stunning rustic yet modern venue located where Omaha meets Bennington. The lighting is low and moody which definitely tested my low-light photography skills, but in the end resulted in the most romantic, candle-lit vibe which I absolutely loved.

When I arrived, I met up with Alex and we got started right away on detail shots. These shots were taken with pockets of light that made the set up look so dreamy. Moving right along, Sadie, the beautiful bride, got into her dress with the help of mom and sis, then did first looks with dad. Next up were portraits of Lukas (groom) and Sadie, and with the help of the wind, the veil was flying, creating beautiful foreground framing. A sweet and simple ceremony sealed the deal and then it was time to dance into the night.

My plan for this wedding was “learn as much as possible, and just grab photos when appropriate”. I felt like a fly on the wall and truly loved the way the photos turned out because of that. It helped confirm my love of a documentary focused approach that I made sure to bring to every wedding I’ve shot since.

Alex, I can’t thank you enough for helping me start on this journey. I’ll forever be thankful for you, friend!
